“New Evangelicals” Converge at Miami Conference Bipartisan Christian leaders of all walks discuss social issues weeks before presidential election. CHICAGO, IL -- Evangelical Christians with a passion for empowering the disenfranchised and saving the planet will put aside their political and denominational differences next month at the 19th Annual Christian Community Development Association (CCDA) Conference, a gathering of members of the largest Christian community development organization in the nation. At the event, held this year in Miami, the 2000-plus member group will tackle some of the core issues defining the current presidential race—unity, peace, change, and the environment--from a faith-based perspective, with a common focus on being a voice for the voiceless. A September Newsweek noted: “Since 2004… evangelicals have softened. Sure, they still care about abortion and gay marriage. But a new, outspoken generation also cares about global warming, Darfur, illiteracy, human trafficking, preventable disease.... Eager to help care for the planet, these Christians are building bridges between left and right, between the secular and the devout...." Sept 6, 2008 “This call for unity, change and bridge-building is not just political rhetoric to us,” says Noel Castellanos, CCDA’s CEO. “Bridging racial, socio-economic and political divides and fostering hope amidst the devastation in our poorer communities at home and abroad–are pillars of CCDA’s overall mission. If that passion makes us “new evangelicals” then that’s what we are!” Read on...

A Texas CCDA Network is Forming Texas, in the house!! Over 2,100 Ministry Practitioners attended this years’ CCDA Miami Conference. 135 of these were from Texas representing 32 organizations (churches, ministries, institutions) across the state. The Local Transformational Missions office of the BGCT supported 21 church leaders from across the state in attending this Kingdom focused conference. Certainly Texas was well represented which indicates that CCDA is spreading across Texas. It’s my hope that this representation will form into a CCDA Texas Network that’s focused on the needs and brokenness of hurting individuals in Texas. 3.9 million Texans live below the poverty rate; 2.6 million people in the state experience shortages of food; 1 million experience hunger based on percentages from a national survey conducted by the US Department of Agriculture. These just name a few of the social ills of our State. These ills are too many and too drastic for any one of us to tackle alone. Together we can do more to expose the ills and injustices and to bring the Shalom of God to our State. After all, Seeking the Peace of the City is our mandate. I’m delighted to see the efforts that are taking place in San Antonio to launch a CCDA Institute in 2009. The date has been set for March 28th & 29th. What’s so significant about this effort is that the focus is not just on having another conference but the aim is to launch a movement to increase the High School Graduation rate and to alleviate poverty in San Antonio. ...and we lost everything My heart is still aching after listening to 26 congregations introduce themselves at a Partners for Sacred Places meeting in Galveston, Texas. Represented at this meeting were just a few of the many Churches and Synagogues in Galveston that were affected by Hurricane Ike. The meeting was held this past Monday evening, November 17th. They shared how Ike had wreaked havoc in their community and on their facility. Almost all of them ended their introduction with “and we lost everything.” Many took in levels of water from 3 to 9 feet. I was particularly moved by the Pastor of the St. Paul United Methodist Church that said “I am homeless; I had to sleep in my car for two weeks, me and my children”. Wow!! The damage in this area is devastating and so widespread. This was a meeting of the Sacred Places in Galveston, not to mention the devastation of other areas from Freeport, all along the Gulf Coast to Orange, Texas which is almost to the boarder of Texas and Louisiana. I also had an opportunity to meet with the Interim Director of Missions for the Galveston Baptist Association, Grayson Glass who indicated that of the 57 churches in the GBA Association, 18 of them sustained damage and the congregations are trying to recover. So far we have only mentioned the Sacred Places and haven’t begun to describe the condition of the communities and neighborhoods where hundreds of families have lost everything and their homes have been destroyed. I passed through the Northeast side of Galveston where several housing projects are abandoned and ruined meaning that these families that once lived there are now displaced. The entire business section of Galveston known as the Strand is under reconstruction. It looks as if every business in this area is closed and under reconstruction. Can you imagine the financial loss that these businesses are incurring daily while they recover? What are we going to do about this? Click here to see World Relief Video Congo in Crisis: Human Catastrophe Unfolds The situation in the war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is critical. Thousands were fleeing as rebel forces advanced on the city of Goma in eastern DRC. Rebel soldiers were on the edge of the city as a fragile ceasefire held. The crisis is rapidly unfolding into a humanitarian disaster on a huge scale. Reports of random killings, rape and other atrocities are widespread. Right now, the situation in Goma is incredibly tense, with many Congolese upset at the inability of the United Nations peacekeeping force to protect them. The 17,000-strong force has been unable to halt the violence in a region that has been devastated by two civil wars. The conflict in the Congo is one of the world’s most under-reported catastrophes. In the past 12 years, an estimated 5 million people have died from malnutrition and disease spurred on by the conflict. “I don’t know what is going to happen,” said one aid worker, “but I think that Goma is going to fall.” Read on...

When you consider the heart of Christian Community Development you must think through shalom in new ways. Shalom, defined as: the world as God intends it to be. In Christendom, we truly believe at the core of God’s character that He is love. See 1 John 4: 7-20 to see the depth of that expression of His love. 1 John 4: 7. Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. If people are going to see that God is love in our society today we may need to grasp that His love is expressed in how we treat one another (both in the church and those outside of it). What is Human Trafficking? Technically the law states: Human trafficking is a serious federal crime with penalties of up to imprisonment for life. Federal law defines "severe forms of trafficking in persons" as: "(A) sex trafficking in which a commercial sex act is induced by force, fraud, or coercion, or in which the person induced to perform such act has not attained 18 years of age ; or (B) the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person for labor or services, through the use of force, fraud, or coercion for the purpose of subjection to involuntary servitude , peonage, debt bondage, or slavery." [U.S.C. §7102(8)] In short, human trafficking is modern-day slavery. At its very core, Human Trafficking is the devaluing of human life to a sell-able commodity. It is manifested in the complete disregard for the value and dignity of human life assigned by the Creator - being made in the image of God. Responding to Human Trafficking What is a human life worth? How much does a child cost? Almost half of all victims of trafficking are children. In India a child costs less than a head of cattle. Children die every day for many causes but when did they become a dispensable and worthless commodity? When did it become acceptable for a child to be sold as a sex slave at 3 years old? or as a gold miner in the desert at 4? Barely potty trained and these children are bought and sold every day in our world. What can we do about this? FIRST, pray – pray – pray! There is a wonderful guide available at the Salvation Army’s site. SECOND, learn more and become active in educating your church and community! THIRD, demand more from your church and denomination in response to these atrocities. What has the BGCT done in reponse to this issue? The BGCT has responded in several ways, from forming a resolution condemning human trafficking to holding conferences to raise awareness on the subject. Slavery ended with William Wilberforce didn’t it? Two hundred years ago, the British Parliament outlawed the trans-Atlantic slave trade, culminating a decades-long struggle led by William Wilberforce. Hear what Condoleezza Rice says about modern-day human trafficking: “Trafficking in persons is a modern-day form of slavery, a new type of global slave trade. Perpetrators prey on the most weak among us, primarily women and children, for profit and gain. They lure victims into involuntary servitude and sexual slavery. Today we are again called by conscience to end the debasement of our fellow men and women.“ Read on...

Down and Dirty, Mark 2:1-5 The ongoing aftermath of Hurricane Ike along the Gulf coast of Texas brings to mind the thought for this month’s Deeper Insights. A group of Pastors in the Elm Grove Network of Churches across Mansfield and Fort Worth led the men of their churches on a mission trip to Sabine Pass, Texas where First Baptist Sabine Pass and most of the city received extensive flooding and wind damage from Hurricane Ike. Most of the residents and business were affected to the extent that they needed and still need teams of volunteers to assist them in the mudding out of their home or business. First Baptist Sabine Pass which is a two story facility had its entire first floor submerged under up to 7 plus feet of water. The first floor was to be their Outreach Center and they are anxious to get it mudded out and rebuilt so that they can begin to be of service to their community during this time. Read on... Useful in the Master’s Hands I am a pastor with a history. I am a recovering pornography addict. My story begins in the second grade, when I was first exposed to sexual images in the form of a Playboy magazine. That event introduced me into a habit that nearly destroyed my life, my marriage, and my ministry. That fateful day was just the first step into my addiction. By the time I was a teenager I was caught up in all kinds of sinful activities. As I grew older my desire for porn grew and drew me deeper into selfishness and carelessness. I knew I was headed down a road of destruction, but even that was not enough to make me stop; I had a real problem... Recommended Resources While there is no way to list all possible options for a Substance Abuse Ministry here are some selected resources that we believe are some the most useful. If you do not find any of these useful or affordable get in touch with us for other options. Perhaps you are aware of a program that could be listed on our blog site for this topic – leave your comments on the Glimpse of Glory blog and let us know of other opportunities to be involved in Substance Abuse Ministry. Addiction Ministry Education Network (AMEN) is a resource for churches who want to learn more about how to begin a substance abuse ministry and as a resource for best practices as well as connections to experts in the field. For more information on AMEN contact Carrie Beaird of the BGCT’s Christian Life Commission, carrie.beaird@bgct.org Celebrate Recovery: www.celebraterecovery.com Celebrate Recovery ministry utilizes 8 Recovery Principles which are based on AA’s 12 steps. The meetings include both large group worship and small group meeting which address a variety of addictions. Celebrate Recovery is a "large umbrella" program under which a limitless number of issues can be dealt with. A church will need to go through specialized training with Celebrate Recovery and will need to identify and train leaders before the ministry can begin. Faith Partners: www.johnsoninstitute.org Faith Partners is a part of the Johnson Institute's Rush Center, has as its mission: ”to engage and assist people of faith in the development of caring communities that promote prevention of alcohol, tobacco and other drug abuse and where recovery from addiction is valued and supported.” Director, Trish Merrill, has developed a program of small group ministry for churches to address the substance abuse issues. Life Recovery Bible The Life Recovery Bible incorporates the 12 Steps into a study Bible Format. This material can be used as the curriculum for a small group Bible Study or Support group. Features:

Recovery notes pinpoint passages and thoughts important to people in recovery.
Twelve Step devotionals discuss the important truths of the Twelve Steps in the context of Scripture.
Serenity Prayer devotionals reflect on principles from the Serenity Prayer illuminated by specific Bible passages.
Recovery Profiles feature recovery lessons drawn from the lives of key Bible people.
Recovery Principle devotionals show how the Bible addresses many specific concerns of people in recovery.

12 Step Life Recovery Devotional Another option to be used in a Bible Study or Small group format. A daily devotional that helps people understand and apply the biblical principles found in the 12 steps of recovery. There are 30 meditations for each step. Alcoholics Anonymous: www.aa.org Narcotics Anonymous: www.na.org A church may also consider sponsoring an AA or NA group. The church would need to contact the national organization or area group members to discuss the possibility. Pathways to Prevention: www.bgct.org/clc The curriculum is a resource guide of lessons, educational material, and studies which hopefully give our churches a place to begin in providing parents, youth leaders, and church staff some tools to use in talking to adolescents about alcohol and drug abuse. This resource guide can be used in an inclusive manner as a series including all of the lessons in an age group, or it can be utilized as stand alone lessons on individual topics. Ideas for utilizing this curriculum in your church: 1. The youth minister could choose various lessons that speak directly to issues that currently impact the youth. This would particularly be useful during events such as homecoming, prom, special events where the peer pressure is great and kids are actively trying to figure out how to make choices about drugs and alcohol. 2. The youth minister could choose specific lessons that have been written for adults and young people to dialogue about the issue of substance abuse. In an informal talk time with adults, youth would be provided an opportunity to hear from adults and their beliefs and expectations in them. This would provide a positive and safe environment for a free exchange of beliefs and feelings. 3. Parents can utilize the material as a resource for information about alcohol and drugs to help them in finding ways to communicate their concerns to their kids in a positive and informed manner. 4. The curriculum can also be utilized in the local church in a recovery focus which would highlight the issue of substance abuse with the entire congregation.

Recovery Sunday and Red Ribbon Week In schools across Texas this fall, students and teachers will observe Red Ribbon week during October 20-24. Communities will be planning prevention and education programs to communicate to students regarding the dangers of alcohol and other drugs. The Christian Life Commission is sponsoring Recovery Sunday on October 19 to encourage churches in Texas to highlight the issues of addiction, recovery, and prevention. In addition, Recovery Sunday gives Texas Baptists an opportunity to affirm and encourage our students and teachers in their ongoing struggle against drugs and alcohol. Red Ribbon week grew out of an effort to honor the memory of a DEA agent named KiKi Camarena who died in Mexico investigating a major drug cartel. Mat 11:28-30 “I will give you rest,” is so good to hear after a long grueling month of back to back projects and activities in fulfilling God’s call to ministry. This is where many of us find ourselves as we pride ourselves in doing the work of ministry. Such was the case for me as the ministry where I serve entered into its new church facility. We were just getting over a Back to School Carnival, a 12 hour Day of Praise Celebration, an Entrance Service, a Dedication Service, and not to mention the weekly ongoing ministries to the community and duties of being on staff at the church. Ministry can wear you out. Aren’t we all guilty? But listen to Jesus’ invitation to joining him in ministry. He bids us in Matthew 11:28-30, “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” The verse in and of itself is so refreshing to hear. 1. What is the problem and how big is this issue? Defined: Hunger, noun. 1 a: a craving or urgent need for food or a specific nutrient; b: an uneasy sensation occasioned by the lack of food; c: a weakened condition brought about by prolonged lack of food1. Many of us think we know what hunger is. We experience hunger when dinner is a little late. Or we recognize hunger on nightly television news reports with pictures of match-stick-looking children with gaunt faces and bloated bellies. Too often we define hunger either as a personal experience of temporary discomfort or as mass starvation. 2. How many people are hungry? Why are there so many hungry people? GLOBALLY - The Extent of Hunger The Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) estimates that 852 million people worldwide live in poverty. Some policy experts place the figure closer to 1 billion while others hold to a lower figure of 700 million. Regardless of which estimate is more accurate, the number is staggering. What is important in responding to the enormous hunger needs is understanding which groups of people face hunger or are most likely to be at risk to hunger. Without question, the world's children are the ones most vulnerable to food crises. The FAO finds that 5 million children die each year from malnourishment and deficiencies in vitamins and minerals. Millions more live in ill health and malnutrition. Know more of the facts - what if you, as one person, could make a difference? To understand poverty in the United States... 3. What does the Bible say about Hunger? Few topics are addressed more often in Scripture than the poor and the way God's people are to minister to them. Ministry to the poor and needy is clearly part of a godly lifestyle. What did Jesus do, what did He instruct us to do? READ ON to RESPOND to the Scripture... 5. When should we do something? There is no time like the present to assess the needs in your community, to begin praying, strategizing and planning how to meet those you encounter with hunger issues. 6. What can we do in, from and through our church to address this issue? Individual Actions | Corporate Actions "Drop by drop the bucket fills." This Swahili proverb reveals the enduring truth that individual actions add up. What one person does about world hunger often seems to be "just a drop in the bucket." But everybody adding drops can fill the bucket. Here are some suggestions for what one person can do in a hungry world:

Pray on a daily basis for the hungry and the wisdom to act in a hungry world. Make prayer about hunger as central as prayer about other personal concerns.
Study what the Bible says about the poor and the hungry.
Give to the hunger ministries of the Southern Baptist North American Mission Board and International Mission Boards. While Southern Baptists have increased giving to worldwide hunger relief,. on average But we are still giving is still less than $1 per person each year.
Read a book about the hunger issue this year.
Volunteer to serve once a month at a shelter for the homeless, soup kitchen, or food bank in your community.
Grow a garden for the elderly and needy in your community.
Talk with fellow church members about the problem of hunger and the Bible's call to Christians to care for the hungry.

                 7. How do we begin or strengthen an existing ministry? Beginning a Hunger Ministry The Steps Identify the hunger needs of the community. This will help you decide on the scope of your task.

Find out if any other organizations are already servicing the hunger needs of that community.
Learn about food banks. Salvageable food can be purchased at food banks at a per pound, inexpensive price.
Learn about availability of surplus food commodities. Contact your local Human Services Department.

Identify your resources. Ascertain church groups (Sunday School, WMU, mission groups) that can provide volunteers, food supplies, financial help, or any other contributions to the hunger ministry. Determine the type of ministry and its policies.

                 8. Are there other issues that we may encounter when helping hungry people? Immigration, Refugees and Hospitality go hand in hand with hunger ministries and ESL as well as other wholistic ministries The Isaac Project The Bible commands us to "obey the rulers that have authority" over us. Likewise, we are also commanded to "welcome strangers." So how does a Christian reconcile these mandates when it comes to immigration in the United States? Showing Hospitality to the Least of These (pdf) The Christian citizen lends his/her voice to a very large and unlikely chorus of opinion and competing interests. As in New Testament times and in all periods of history, believers are called to engage the problems of the larger society with a strong voice and humble heart.

There is an old saying: “Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.” Is that all we hope to do with a hunger ministry? I dare say the next part of the axiom is better: Teach a man to fish and feed him for a life time. But I believe there are more parts to this saying that we rarely hear: Introduce the man to the Creator of the fish (and himself) and feed him for all eternity! But how about we add: teach the man on the journey to be a fisher of men himself (that would be the fulfillment of the Great Commission) and next he would have opportunity to take seriously his stewardship of the pond? That man (or woman) would then have opportunity to recognize God’s sovereignty in their life, their community, and His purpose for them in this world. How is a ministry in His name able to only serve food to the hungry and not say that this food satisfies for a time but as it is given in the Name of Jesus Christ -- he cares for your physical needs and your spiritual needs at the same time? Life is short; let them have the choicest morsels! Some call that dessert. I call that serving Christ. Literacy Connection with Hunger Ministries Distribute books at sites where food is distributed. In South Dakota this is known as Bread for the Brain. Ideally, hunger relief ministries can be a part of local First Book chapters (US nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide disadvantaged children with new books (www.firstbook.org). Include information about local literacy providers (preferably church-based) in the book. Select attractive books that invite interest. Work with church libraries to get donations in good condition. Invite local literacy providers to place signage in areas where food is distributed. Promote ESL as well as basic literacy or GED. Use language like, “If you know someone who would like to learn to read better or who would like to work on his/her GED, contact…” Or in Spanish, ESL classes at FBC, ... Connect with local Christian Women’s or Men’s Job Corps programs. Provide literature in areas where food is distributed. Domestic Violence A Survivor’s Story By Mrs. Marilyn Davis My story has been one of abuse. I was beaten for years and did not know it was wrong. I lived years of my life a victim of domestic violence. It was the same thing over and over. Then I was educated on the way a woman is to be treated and I found out being beaten was unacceptable. I had been drug down two flights of stairs and then hung over the balcony, screaming and crying. It seems when things like this happened no one was around. My abuser had control. That is what abusers really want. I remember when the perpetrator broke my arm and I went to the hospital. No one cared until a policeman in the emergency room talked with me and told me this was wrong. But I would not press charges. Domestic Violence in Texas According to the Texas Council on Family Violence Texans understand that domestic violence is a serious problem in our state. Texans’ awareness of domestic violence as a crime and their understanding that it is a serious issue that must be addressed is largely responsible for the increase in services available to victims. Yet Texans clearly understand that more can and should be done to help victims of domestic violence. In fact, 60 percent of respondents to our survey believe that Texas does not do enough to help survivors and their families. Unfortunately, Texans demonstrate a willingness to blame domestic violence on circumstances beyond an abuser’s control, rather than acknowledge the abuser’s culpability. Also, a majority of Texans demonstrate a willingness to blame victims for being abused which limits the options available to those in abusive relationships. These barriers must be addressed in order for more victims of domestic violence to get the help they need, when they need it. NOT in Our Church?! In Memory of Leslie, Nathen and Carmen Jennings June 30, 2006 This family photo from 2000 does not tell the same story as the events of June 2006 unfolded. Leslie, 43, had asked her pastor to pray for her marriage in early June, about 2 weeks before she filed for divorce. Richard, 52, sought his sister's prayers to help him keep his family together. But the same day, he shot and killed his estranged wife, their 11-year-old son, Nathen, and their 7-year-old daughter, Carmen. He seriously wounded a Sheriff's Deputy with a shotgun blast as he responded to the frantic 911 calls from Carmen and her 13-year-old brother, Cullen. Jennings’ final act was to direct a fatal shot at himself. Cullen was the sole family survivor.

Domestic Violence Frequently Asked Questions Q: What is domestic violence? A: Domestic violence refers to a pattern of violent and coercive behavior exercised by one adult in an intimate relationship over another. It is not “marital conflict,” “mutual abuse,” “a lovers’ quarrel,” or “a private family matter.” It may consist of repeated, severe beatings or more subtle forms of abuse, including threats and control. Q: Who are the victims of domestic violence? A: According to the U.S. Department of Justice, 95% of domestic violence victims in America are women, although men may also be victims. Regardless of who is being victimized, domestic violence is a serious problem that needs to be addressed by religious communities. Q: How prevalent is domestic violence? A: Surveys from the U.S. and Canada indicate that domestic violence occurs in 28% of all marriages. Researchers believe this estimate is too low since most domestic violence incidents are unreported. Teen Relationships With Violence This is not only about adults. Unfortunately, adolescents in our communities are vulnerable to dating violence. The statistics are disturbing: 89 percent of teens say they have been in dating relationships, while 40 percent of teenage girls ages 14-17 report knowing someone their age who has been hurt or beaten by a boyfriend (Children Now/Kaiser Permanente, December 1995). Research indicates that like adult domestic violence, females are the victims in most cases of teen violence (Levy, 1991; Foshee, 1996; Silverman, J. et al, 2001). Girls who experience dating violence are at increased risk for substance abuse, eating disorders, risky sexual behavior, pregnancy and suicide (Silverman, Raj, Mucci and Hathaway, 2001). What Can Your Church Do? 10 ways your church can make a difference. The religious communities provide a safe haven for women and families in need. In addition, they exhort society to share compassion and comfort with those afflicted by the tragedy of domestic violence. Leaders of the religious community have identified actions to create a unified response to violence against women. 1: Become a Safe Place. Make your church a safe place where victims of domestic violence can come for help. Display brochures and posters which include the telephone number of the domestic violence and sexual assault programs in your area. Publicize the National Domestic Violence Hotline number, 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) or 1-800-787-3224 (TDD). 2: Educate the Congregation. Provide ways for members of the congregation to learn as much as they can about domestic and sexual violence. Routinely include information in monthly newsletters, on bulletin boards, and in marriage preparation classes. Sponsor educational seminars. How Can I Help a Friend or Family Member Who is Being Abused? Don’t be afraid to let him or her know that you are concerned for their safety. Help your friend or family member recognize the abuse. Tell him or her you see what is going on and that you want to help. Help them recognize that what is happening is not “normal” and that they deserve a healthy, non-violent relationship. Acknowledge that he or she is in a very difficult and scary situation. Let your friend or family member know that the abuse is not their fault. Reassure him or her that they are not alone and that there is help and support out there. A Deeper Insight Religious teachings can serve as either a resource or a roadblock in addressing the issue of domestic violence. As religious communities, our responsibility is to minimize any barriers facing abused members of our congregations and maximize the resources that exist within our religious traditions. The following quote by Reverend Al Miles frames the issue of domestic violence within the religious community, identifying complacency among many clergy with confronting abuse and the urgent need to address the problem as a pastoral duty. “For the most part clergy have hindered rather than helped women break free from their abusive partners. Our apathy, denial, exhortations, ignorance, and misinterpretations of the Bible have added to women’s pain and suffering and placed them in even greater danger. The time is long overdue for us pastors to stop turning our backs on domestic violence and begin speaking out against this sin…We have a responsibility to preach and teach the biblical truths about God’s love, which binds women and men together as equals rather than ordering them in a hierarchy. As long as we refuse to fully carry out our pastoral duties, victims of domestic violence will continue to crumble emotionally, psychologically, and spiritually underneath the weight of brutality and scriptural misinterpretations, which no human deserves.” - Rev. Texas Baptist Conference of the Deaf 59th Anniversary June 13 - 15, 2008, Baylor University, Waco, Texas Greetings from the President- Grace and peace unto you in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! Are you here by chance? No, the Lord brought each and every one of you here at Baylor University for His purpose and pleasure! We are one year away from the great 60th Anniversary of T.B.C.D. making this year 59th Anniversary! T.B.C.D. and the officers welcome each one of you and may you receive unlimited blessings this year. We are now at half way of F.A.I.T.H. cycle. We started with Fruit of Spirit in 2006 led by Reverend Jeff Brewer of Silent Friend Chapel, Dallas, TX. He used Galatians 5:22-23 to lead the F.A.I.T.H. conference. Reverend Danny Bice led the TBCD 2007 with Philippians 2:5 as we learn about Attitude. We are honored to have Kevin Clark from North Carolina as our Conference Pastor as he leads us to study the word Integrity, the third letter of F.A.I.T.H. LaBretta Flores of San Antonio Baptist Deaf Mission will lead the music. Family Celebration Night will be a blessing to us all! T.A.S.B.I.D. will be teaching the interpreters during workshop on Saturday morning. It is the prayers of the Officers and the President that after this conference, we will all go home and share with those who were not able to attend. What to share? The word Integrity and why it is important for every Christian to have this characteristic in their lives. America is in desperate need for more people with integrity. I encourage you to pray daily for T.B.C.D. to continue to stay strong and be ready to return in 2009. We will look at the fourth letter of F.A.I.T.H. which is Trust. In HIS Unfailing Love, Rev. Bill Atwell TBCD President

The long awaited TBCD Website (www.tbcdtexas.org) is now up and running. The website has been developed to improve communications between the Deaf and Hearing Community across Texas. The site currently contains all of the pre-registration forms and information for the upcoming Texas Baptist Conference for the Deaf which is scheduled for June 13-15 on Baylor’s Campus in Waco. It will hopefully be the place where the Deaf can come to discover the latest happenings among the Deaf. Roberta Green, Assistant Secretary made this a priority and has given long hours towards launching the site. Thank you Roberta. We have been struggling to have ongoing communications between the Deaf and the office of Local Transformational Missions and this site will definitely improve communications. We can now post the Deaf Newsletter, Contact Information for officers, Deaf Ministries and Churches in Texas. We also have plans for adding videos of deaf ministries around the state. The site will be an important link to and with the Deaf Community. Check it out and let us know what you think. It is still under construction as we try to make it the most effective communication tool between the Deaf and Hearing world. Deaf Ministry Across Texas- What are we going to do about it? As the Deaf Liaison of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, I have asked several Deaf Leaders to describe the state of the Deaf Ministry across Texas from their perspective. I’m sure that you will be enlightened by this fresh insight from individuals that are on the front lines of this very important ministry and a vast mission field. Listen to Nancy Parrish, a very significant figure and leader to and in the Deaf Community. “As I see it, Deaf Ministry is and always has been an after-thought of most Southern Baptist Churches. I do not know a polite way to say this, but this is a people group that has no "VOICE" when it comes to speaking up for themselves. In February of 2006 Deaf Prison Ministries Network was given the opportunity to acquire a twenty-seven acre retreat center. This facility previously provided aftercare for hearing ex-offenders. It is located approximated fifty miles north of Houston, Texas near the beautiful Sam Houston National Forest and has been named Healing Hands Ranch. This aftercare facility is also approximately thirty miles from where over one hundred deaf offenders are housed in Huntsville Texas. Our needs are tremendous but we are trusting God, and praying that all resources and programs will be in place by January 2007 so that we can begin accepting residence who are deaf ex-offenders. Our Program at Healing Hands Ranch will consist of:

                    Spiritual growth and discipleship training.
                    Life skills training.
                    Education and GED completion.
                    Mentoring.
                    Addiction rehabilitation.
                    On-site job training opportunities.

Deaf Deacon Hears and Meets Their Needs It was an historic moment in the 60 year history of the Deaf Ministry at the First Baptist Church Texarkana and in the life of Terry Tribble and his wife Debbie. Terry was one of thirteen Deacons to be ordained at FBC Texarkana and the first Deaf Deacon to be ordained at the church. The service was held at FBC Texarkana during their Wednesday night service on January 30th, 2008. Dr. Jeff Schreve is the Pastor and he too was delighted to charge these Deacons with their Godly duty and responsibilities. It was also a memorable moment for the Deaf Community across Texas to see that God has not forgotten them as He continues to call forth Leaders and Servants to meet needs in the Deaf Community. Terry Tribble and his lovely wife have dedicated their lives to serving the Lord through meeting needs in the Deaf Community. Terry and Debbie are former members of the Silent Friends Chapel at First Baptist Dallas and have been serving in the Deaf work at First Baptist Texarkana for the past six years. Terry and Debbie are viewed as “the best huggers and hand-shakers” as they greet people at the church each Sunday says Dr. Larry Sims, Associate Pastor – FBC Texarkana. Terry is called on to make home and hospital visits to the Deaf Congregation. He also visits the Deaf Widows. It makes a difference to the Deaf when one of their own shows up to minister to them in their time of need. Dr. Rolf Wylie, Deaf Interpreter congratulates Terry and his wife on this special occasion. The couple was also presented a plaque from the Local Transformational Missions office of the Baptist General Convention of Texas for their dedication and service to the Deaf Community. May the Hand of God remain upon this couple as they live out their life of service to the Lord and the Deaf Community.

A Deeper Insight He told them still another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like unto a mustard seed, which a man took, and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all your seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and perch in its branches.” (NIV). Jesus again is in dialog with His disciples to help them gain an understanding of the Kingdom of God and how to recognize it once it is revealed. He uses the idea of a mustard seed which at that time was the smallest seed in the plant world. Picture this small seed being planted in a farmer’s field. Note the dichotomy; a small seed verses the large field. Although it was a small seed each seed could grow into a very large bush. It would be 12 to 15 feet tall. The birds would make their nests in it. Jesus was referring to this bush. Note also the ambiguity of the scene. How will the farmer know where he planted the seed being that the seed is so small and the field is so large? If he didn’t have a system to identify where the seed was being planted then how would he know where to relocate the seed in order to water and nurture it to full maturity? Perhaps this points to Paul’s idea of spiritual growth in the Lord when he says that I planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. (I Cor. 3:6). When we work for Kingdom sake then we have to leave the results up to the King. He will nurture and produce the results. You Are On Missions!! The constant reminder of the Activity Director, “You are on Vacation” is still ringing in my mind as I write this article. Her task was to keep encouraging the sailing vacationers to have fun and enjoy themselves because “you are on vacation.” Doesn’t that sound like the continuous tug of the Holy Spirit on our hearts to remind us that we are always on missions, bearing the saving message of Jesus Christ and being His presence to those that He puts in our way? God is passionately at work to redeem the lost and to reconcile the world unto Himself. He chooses to use you and I in the process to be his presence so that the lost will be compelled to come into a personal relationship with Jesus. Hence, You are on Missions. II Corinthians 4:10-12 reminds us that “We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that His life may be revealed in our mortal body.” (NIV) Jesus was dying to self daily so that others could come into a relationship with God the Father and be the whole person as God originally intended them to be (Shalom). When we die to self so that Jesus can live in our body and conquer the flesh and trials of life then others can see the power and life of Jesus in us. This then is being on Missions, be it in and around our own communities or beyond where we live. We can be the presence of Christ ministering to the needs of others so that they might see the life of Jesus in us and be compelled to come into a relationship with our Lord. This is being on Missions. The Activity Director also gave constant reminders of upcoming opportunities for shows, entertainment, shore excursions, etc. The Local Transformational Missions team would like to make you aware of some Summers Missions and Ministry Opportunities around the state of Texas. We have received these opportunities from Missions Centers and Churches from around the state. The list is not an exhaustive list of every opportunity so therefore we would like to know of the opportunities in your area so that we can make the list more comprehensive. A Volunteer Deficit in the Valley I am sure that most of us are familiar with Luke 5:1-11 the biblical passage of the great catch of fish. The part of the passage that really gets my attention is the part that says the catch of fish was so great that they had to ask for help from another boat to get them. Then both boats were so filled with the fish that they began to sink. (vs. 6-7) The Passage goes on to say that all the people were “astonished” at the catch. Jesus calmed them by saying “Do not be afraid, From now on you will catch men”. Every summer we have hundreds of Summer missionaries come and help us with VBS. Yet every year we can only fill about half of the 30-40 requests that we receive requesting VBS groups. We are asking for your help to bring in this “big catch”. Summer VBS is probably the biggest evangelistic event we have in the Valley every year. Let’s work together to answer the call for help. God wants to bless us with a “big catch”. Meeting the Needs of Mission Brenham In the midst of our distress, God looked down and saw how humanity wandered like lost sheep without a shepherd. He came in the flesh and walked with us. He felt the pain of human existence,-rejection, disappointment, hunger, weariness, torture. The Easter story reminds us of His great sacrifice culminated in our eternal good. Brenham is like the rest of the world, a place with real hurt. In the housing projects many moms are afraid to send their children outside to play, little girls are abused by rarely seen uncles, sisters murdered brothers, laziness, drunkenness, lonely young ladies looking for love in uncaring arms, generational poverty, generational crime, and generational abuse. It is our inclination to move towards comfort, which inevitably moves us away from those whose lives are filled with hurt, violence, abuse, depression, hopelessness, and frustration. In this matter we must make a conscious effort to move towards the need, like a fireman who runs into a burning building. We must slip on the sandals of Christ and walk where our feet don’t always want to take us. Not to just care for others from a distance but have compassion (which comes from the Latin “to suffer with”). Relocation is an important part of our community development plan. Living and working in or nearby the housing projects has always been our goal. Chris Gaines (youth) lives in the Gayhill projects and Lauren Hall (youth girls) is moving into the Clayton projects. Marcus Lawhon (director/pastor) and family will be building a home within a year directly across from “The West” projects on Burleson St. Mission Brenham is set in May to purchase five acres next to the Clayton housing projects. This will be another base of operations as we reach out to our low-income neighbors through tutoring, job training, chronological bible storying, Bible studies, summer camps, computer training…sharing our lives together.

Youth Can Be On Missions Too!! After a long awaited two years of talking and learning about being on Missions, The Cornerstone Baptist Church Youth embarked upon their first Mission Trip. They were filled with excitement and anticipation concerning the Missions trip to the Rio Grand Valley scheduled for August 12th – 17th. Cornerstone Baptist Church members and supporters contributed to the Mission Trip via a Rice Bowl fundraising campaign. The youth prepared craft activities and Bible lessons for 4 days of ministry prior to the trip. The excitement built and the monies were raised and on Sunday morning August 12th, Pastor Chris Simmons prayed for and commissioned these youth and they were off on Missions to the Valley. As it turns out it was indeed a missions experience designed by God for these young people of South Dallas. They conducted Vacation Bible School in the Colonia called “La Fruita” located in Mission, Texas. They ministered to 40 children and youth and distributed 25 back packs to children returning back to school. The Pastor of this particular Colonia (community) is Pastor Omar of Broadway Baptist Church. The church is in the process of building a parsonage for their pastor and family. The youth got the opportunity to paint the overhang of the parsonage roof and clear a trash pile from the property. Keagan Oka puts it in these words “Every second of the trip was valuable in teaching us lessons of faith, contentment, and relationships.” For you see these youth have been on the receiving end of being blessed and can now be a blessing to others and realize just how blessed they are. Here’s the rest of Keagan’s testimony: “The way the children looked forward to seeing what activities we had planned for them made me happy and the way the children had little more than nothing and never complained made me question my genuine happiness. I mean God continually blesses me and the more He blesses me the more I expect from Him. The time spent in Mexico made me wonder how people can live in such horrible conditions. One guy tried to sell us margaritas (alcohol) while knowing none of us are of drinking age. While crossing the bridge to get into Mexico, people would beg for money while starving underneath the bridge. I had never seen anything like it. I am very thankful for all the things I’ve seen while on this mission trip and I’ll never forget it.” The week was topped off with a day at Fiesta Texas which was filled with fun even though it was threatened by the remnants of Hurricane Erin on Friday. Even in this God protected us and kept us from the storm and rains. The week was a good week of ministry and we appreciate your prayers and support. The youth are already looking forward to next year mission trip. We solicit your continual prayers for these and other Youths. We pray that they will continue to grow spiritually and in a deeper relationship with our Lord as we join Him on missions. A Deeper Insight “Show me the Kingdom,” is the sentiment of many who are not quite convinced that the Kingdom of God is at hand. The Kingdom has come near you, this is the promise and mission of our Lord which is to make His Kingdom apparent and available to you and I here on Earth as it is in Heaven. In fact, are we not instructed to pray for this? Pray “Thy Kingdom come Thy Will be done on Earth as it is in heaven.” So our real question ought to be where is it taking place and what does it look like? I’m glad you asked. Jesus encountered a similar response from His Disciples as He sought to help them understand the Kingdom and how to recognize it when it is revealed. He speaks in parables to unlock the mysteries of the Kingdom for His disciples. Matthew records seven of these parables in Matthew 13:1-50. The parables recorded here are: The Sower, v 3-23, The Tares, v 24-30, The Mustard Seed, v 31-32, The Leaven v 33-35, The Hidden Treasure, v 44, The Pearl v 45-46 and The Net, v 47-50. Several of these parables have gripped me and the Lord has used them to open my eyes to His Kingdom here on Earth and how I am to live in it. This is what I wish to share with you in this Deeper Insight. The Dallas Baptist Association is looking for six young people, eighteen and older, to serve as our LifeChangers summer missionaries. This summer we are going to be serving in many different ways. We will lead a few soccer camps, work with refugees transitioning into life here in Dallas, work with the mentally ill, do some construction projects and so much more. We will also, for the second year, take a life-changing trip to Waco to participate in one of Mission Waco's poverty simulations. LifeChangers are going to have a blast this summer discovering all that God has in store for our time together. For more information you can visit our website: www.lcdallas.org or contact Stacy Alvizo, Community Ministries Intern at the Dallas Baptist Association. I can be reached at 214-319-1169 or 214-324-2803. Why Community and Restorative Justice in the church? Texas Baptists have a great opportunity to provide compassionate ministry to the mission field of the criminal justice system. We have the highest per capita incarceration rate in the U.S. Our goal and responsibility is to teach churches and their members to design missions/ministry endeavors intersecting the issues of the whole criminal justice system with purpose and prudence. The ministry extends to all the professionals who work in this arena as well. Additionally, we have an opportunity to support the mission endeavors of a variety of ministries including: hospitality houses, visitor centers, victim ministries, prison ministries, ex-offender re-entry, and churches that provide compassionate care for families touched by the criminal justice system statewide. *Disclaimer* In this one newsletter we could not possibly include all of the ministries that we are aware of in Texas but we wanted to give you a sampling of what is going on around the state. NOTE: It is not our intent by this newsletter to endorse a single program nor do we suggest by inclusion of a ministry that we endorse or certify the validity or reputation of their programs or individuals involved in the programs. A Deeper Insight Restorative Justice is NOT just another term for Prison Ministry! The historical paradigm for prison ministry hung its hat on Matthew 25 - I was in prison and you visited me... But just as the criminal justice system has begun to realize that the victims needed a voice in the system our ministries began to respond to the “victim” aspects as the Good Samaritan in Luke 10: 30-37. Ministries to the family members of those entangled in the system also have come more into view as additional opportunities as well. The most challenging area remains the in area of prisoners returning to their communities. The concepts of Restorative Justice must include aftercare and re-entry because the majority of offenders are at some point returning to their communities.
